Leheriya, also spelled Lehriya, is a traditional tie-dye textile technique that originated in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The word "leheriya" translates to "waves" in Hindi, which reflects the characteristic wavy patterns created by this dyeing technique.

Leheriya involves the use of a resist-dyeing method to create vibrant and colorful patterns on fabric, typically using cotton or silk materials. The fabric is first folded or twisted in a specific way and then tied at various intervals using thread or string. The tied portions act as a resist, preventing the dye from reaching those areas and creating distinct undyed lines or waves on the fabric.

After the fabric is tied, it is immersed in dyes. Traditionally, natural dyes were used, including colors such as indigo blue, yellow, red, and green. The fabric is then carefully dyed, ensuring that the desired color penetrates the untied areas, while the tied sections remain untouched. The fabric is often dyed multiple times to achieve a rich and vibrant color palette.

Once the dyeing process is complete, the fabric is untied, revealing the unique leheriya patterns. The patterns can range from simple horizontal or diagonal lines to more intricate and complex wave-like designs. The wavy lines give the fabric a dynamic and flowing appearance.

Leheriya textiles are commonly used to create traditional Rajasthani garments such as sarees, turbans, dupattas (scarves), and dresses. They are also used in other clothing items and accessories like shirts, skirts, stoles, and bags. The bright colors and distinctive patterns of leheriya make it a popular choice for festive occasions, weddings, and cultural celebrations.

Leheriya has a long history and cultural significance in Rajasthan. It is considered a symbol of Rajasthani identity and craftsmanship. The technique has been passed down through generations of artisans, and their expertise lies in creating precise patterns and achieving vibrant color combinations.

Today, leheriya continues to be appreciated for its intricate designs, vibrant colors, and its ability to capture the essence of Rajasthani culture. The art form has also evolved to incorporate modern interpretations, experimenting with new color palettes and combining leheriya with contemporary fashion styles.
